Transportation

Madrid has a modern, efficient and integrated public transportation system that includes buses, metro, trains, and taxis. You can easily get around the city using any of these options, or you can rent a bike or a car if you prefer. The metro is especially convenient, as it covers most of the city and runs frequently. The city provides several options for purchasing tickets. You can buy a single ticket or a multi-day pass at the kiosks located at each metro station depending on your needs. If you are planning to stay for up to 5 days, one of the best all-around passes we found is the Madrid City Card, the city’s official tourist card issued by the Madrid City Council. This card includes a Tourist Pass issued by CRTM, Madrid’s Regional Transport Consortium, which can be used on the city’s public transport system and it also allows tourists to enjoy benefits and discounts at the city’s main tourist, cultural and leisure attractions. If you plan to stay for a longer period of time, you can acquire a Multi Card at one of the automated kiosks in any Madrid Metro station or at licensed tobacco shops and selling points. The price is 2,50€ for the card itself (as of July 2023) and then you can buy whichever ticket or ticket packs suit you best. Click here for more info on the Madrid Multi Card.

In our opinion, Madrid’s public transportation is world-class level. It consists of several modes of transport that are very well-integrated and connect the city and its surroundings. With the right combination of the various forms of public transport you can be within a couple of blocks from pretty much anywhere it is that you want to be. Here are some of the main features of each mode:

Metro

The metro is the fastest, most efficient and by far the most popular way to get around Madrid. It has 12 lines, 3 light rail lines, and a special line that connects two stations. It covers the entire city and a large part of the suburbs. It also has a direct line to the airport and the trade fair center.

The metro runs from 6:00am to 1:30am, with frequent trains during peak hours. You can buy single tickets, 10-trip tickets, annual passes or tourist passes for the metro system. You can download the latest Madrid Metro Maps here.

Alternative taxi services such as Uber and Cabify also operate in Madrid, providing another option to traditional taxis. These services can be accessed through their dedicated mobile apps that allow users to book a ride and track the arrival of their driver. It also offers the convenience of cashless payment, automatic fare calculation, and the ability to rate drivers, ensuring a reliable and comfortable transportation experience.

Bus

The bus network in Madrid is extensive and reliable. It has over 200 lines that cover all areas of the city. In order to use the buses, you can buy a single ticket directly on-board the bus. You can also buy a MetroBus ticket pack at any of the automated kiosks in any metro station and load it onto the Multi Card. If you bought the Tourist Pass you can use the same 10-trip ticket or tourist pass for the buses as for the metro.

Cercanías RENFE (Commuter Trains)

The Cercanías are suburban trains that connect Madrid with other towns and cities in the region. It can also be used to travel to different stops inside the city but you must be aware that it is not the same as the metro and you may need to buy a separate ticket in order to use them.

These trains are useful for traveling to places like Aranjuez, Alcalá de Henares or El Escorial. The cercanías have 9 lines and run from 5am to midnight. You can buy single tickets or monthly passes for the Cercanías. Click here to see the Renfe Cercanías line map.

Electric Bikes

The electric bikes are an eco-friendly and fun option to get around Madrid. They are called BiciMAD and are available in stations around the city center. You can rent them by using an app or a card, and pay by the minute or by the hour. The electric BiciMAD bikes are available 24/7.

Taxis

The taxis in Madrid are comfortable and inexpensive compared to other European cities. They are white with a red stripe and have a green light when they are free. You can hail them on the street, call them by phone, or use an app. The taxis have a fixed rate of 30€ to and from the airport, and a meter for other journeys.

However, it’s worth noting that these taxi services may have specific pick-up and drop-off locations in certain areas of the city due to local regulations. It’s always a good idea to familiarize yourself with the rules and policies of each service to ensure a smooth and hassle-free trip.

Madrid has a continental climate, which means that it has hot summers and cold winters. Another thing to keep in mind is that the air is generally quite dry compared to other parts of Spain. This causes a noticeable contrast between daytime and nighttime temperatures.

The average temperature in July and August can reach over 30°C (86°F), while in January and February it can drop below 5°C (41°F). It isn’t uncommon, however, for the air temperature to reach 35ºC (95ºF) and the ground temperature 40ºC+ (104ºF+) in the summer.
If you prefer mild and pleasant weather, the best time to visit Madrid is in the spring (March to May) or fall (September to November), when the temperature is around 20°C (68°F) and the sun shines most of the time.
